Is there a COVID vaccine for children less than 18 years old?
This question was answered live at the virtual conference titled, "Don’t Hesitate to Vaccinate! Our Experts Tell You Why" recorded on January 28, 2021.
Short Answer:
Not yet.
Explanation:
Pfizer and Moderna are actively recruiting for pediatric studies, as well as for pregnant women. We're going to be getting data very soon on the 12 to 18 age range. Hopefully, by fall 2021 we would potentially have children vaccinated to be able to start school.
So far, Pfizer conducted their studies on patients aged 16 years old and up, but Moderna only did their studies on patients 18 years and up. By law, only the Pfizer COVID vaccine is authorized for patients 16 and up. You can't give Moderna to anyone under 18 right now.
Several companies have begun enrolling children as young as age 12 in COVID-19 vaccine clinical trials. Studies including younger children will begin soon.
